Cranking speed would be lower with plugs in all cylinders except the one being tested. (?)

Yeah I sort of thought of that after posting it, but that would mean his leakdown must be pretty bad if the difference in cranking speed gives +50% compression.

Compression might improve once the engine has run for a while. 90+ is pretty good. 60 is plenty to start and run.

Pgh and Don,

For the first test, plugs were installed at each cylinder except the one with the compression tester. And 2d test was with all plugs out and tester moved from cylinder to cylinder. Both tests were using the starter motor only.

The good news: This morning, for the first time in 60 years the engine started and ran, I shut down after about 3 minutes - enuf for now! New gas, new breaker setting, 12 v on starter motor, new "flat" fill valve, electric fuel pump, jumpered ignition switch - prayer.

Careful using 12V as it can break apart the starter housing due to the added torque and speed from the sudden engagement. Also, don’t forget that it is a positive ground car.
