Good Afternoon...At the worst...to get it into the garage, you could jack it up, put it on a couple of stands...for the rear end and disconnect the driveshaft...and push it into the garage...where it is safe until you can figure out the fix...Ernie in Arizona

I just had a thought. Instead of moving it with the starter, why not apply brakes and clutch at the same time, and see which direction it lurches when I hit the starter? Might remove the hassle of figuring how to get it back in the garage. Last time this happened I luckily got a very skilled young tow truck driver who gently slid it into the garage. What a nail-biter! I should have known better this time, but I thought with the shifter in neutral it was a done deal. When it still moved back I thought, erroneously, that letting it move just a little more would make it come out of R. Didn't work out that way. Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm stuck 15 miles away for the night. Any ideas on what to do tomorrow?

Maybe this won’t work for your problem, but this happened to me with my three on the tree/OD Mayfair. Couldn’t get it out of reverse for anything. Finally, I jacked up both rear wheels and out she came nice and easy. Maybe you tried this and it didn’t work, but thought I’d share my experience.

I'll try it this morning. This reminds me I need to buy a floor jack! I haven't used the bumper jack yet, so it'll be good practice. Thanks.

Both wheels off the ground, and you’ll have to get in the car. Jack stands required. Don’t get in the car using a bumper jack only!

I used the bumper jack once when I first got my car, scary stuff! I would use a jack that you can get under rear-end and save the bumper jack for display purposes only..

If you put the back tires on a set of dollies that will allow you to get your car back in the garage and then move it around a bit while you work to figure out what's going on. Sometimes used ones show up on FB Marketplace.

Those dollies look like the ticket. I jacked up the left rear today. (I used a floor jack and a jack stand.) No difference in the shifter, which won't even go into reverse now, although the wheel turns real good... backwards. So that trick didn't work. Can anyone tell me why the clutch has no effect? I suppose it's a simple matter of mechanics... but I'm no expert.

If the car has been sitting for a long time, it's quite possible that the clutch plate has seized to the flywheel. You would have to lift up the car and put it up on stands, then remove the lower clutch housing cover and have someone actuate the clutch to the floor while watching. It doesn't move much but you may be able to tell if it's stuck or not as it should come back with the pressure plate due it having a small spring attached to pull it away from the flywheel. If it stays against the flywheel, then it's stuck and will likely have to be disassembled to free it up. As you say, not being a mechanic, it might require being taken to a shop with a transmission jack and all the proper tools but it's actually not all the difficult once the transmission has been removed. There may be tricks for freeing it without doing all that but even if there were, they would not clean and lightly lubricate the spline that the clutch plate slides on.
