I'm sure the shop won't have too much trouble figuring out what the issue is. Let us know what they find, and what they do to repair it.

Will do. Tough part is getting it on and off a flatbed, and onto a hoist. Another thing found in the shop manual: It says specifically that an OD trans can get stuck in reverses if there is a bad OD solenoid.

I was curious to see what else you had found in the Service Manual, so had a look. For all the conversation we've had about your transmission I can't believe nobody mentioned #7 under Trouble Shooting, "Lock-up in reverse gear.", considering that is your exact problem! Did you pass this information along to the shop that has your car?
Hopefully your back on the road soon, and are able to go both forward and reverse! LOL

No one has the car yet. Thanks for the reference! Is that the one about the Overdrive solenoid? The car was parked with the overdrive button pushed in, for "on", and the trans in reverse. Putting it in reverse is habit for me, because the car then won't roll. I often leave it with the OD engaged. I tried pulling and pushing the OD button to no effect. I had the ignition on, since the OD is electric. But now that it's jacked up, I can try it with the engine running and the back wheel spinning. Who knows? Could work.

Any ideas on how to get the car to a shop and up on a hoist with the rear wheels locked up?

Not a problem for any normal tow truck. Or is there some reason you need to do something different?

They'll have to slide it on and off the truck because the back wheels are locked. Then somehow slide it onto the shop lift, unless I can find a shop that will work on a transmission using a creeper.
Perhaps I'll just back it onto my ramps using the starter, then jack up the front, put jack stands under it and let the retired mechanic who knows the whole car come over and pull the transmission... after he signs a release!

Or you could unbolt the rear u-joint, a ten minute job.
