Steel reinforcing piece behind bumper 1940 110

When I got to removing the bumpers and sending them for chrome I found a 60 inch by 3 inch plate of steel between the bumper and the mounting brackets. I presume this was possible for some small type of hitch maybe.

There was a hole that looked like it was cut with a torch directly through the Packard logo (Why, Why) on the bumper that matched the one in the plate. I found a different rear bumper for the car to have chromed but this car was junked once and brought out of there and turned into a driver of sorts. Different times and these things happened. It may actually provide a bit of protection if rear ended.

I have a picture that shows the hole in the rear bumper circa?? when I have documentation that the car was in Ellsworth, Wisconsin.

Just got the bumpers back from Chroming after 9 months and they look great.

I don't think that's a stock piece but you have the earlier style bumpers that I am not overly-familiar with. Only one of my 1940s had them and I never removed them. If the rough car is yours, you have the later trunk emblem.

The photo's came in a book that the prior owner found in the car and it's hard to see in the photo but the hole in the bumper is the same as I found it.

This one other photo I have of it in that condition.
