Rattling/Play in Fan

Hi all,

I was driving down the road yesterday when I heard a snap, almost like running over a tree limb in the road. After which my fan started squeaking horribly and had a slight rattle. When I finally got home, I looked over the motor and didn’t see anything loose or broken, but the fan has play and squeaks when I pull it back and forth.

I’m wondering what could have broken, and how to replace/repair it. The car drove fine with no noticeable loss in performance, but I’d like to get this fixed sooner rather than later.

The motor is a 1940 100hp, L-Head, Inline 6 for reference!

Isn't the fan attached to the water pump? Gotta be a bad pump then.

It is and I know the pump is on its last legs (running hotter than normal, small leak). I’ve ordered a replacement from Kanter Auto, but I had no idea it failing could affect the fan as such.

Just my luck the water pump replacement is on back order until who knows when and I haven’t had any luck find any other replacements haha

The fan is attached directly to the water pump shaft so when the water pump bearing starts to fail, it will cause play in the fan.

If it is causing that many issues, I would suggest not driving it or running the engine until you get the new pump installed. If it gets any worse, you could have a fan blade collide with the radiator and that would be extremely bad…

Any other locations/sites that sell a water pump/rebuild kit. I’d like to not wait months for any word on a new one

As a part of the look over, ups did check the four bolts which hold the fan and pulley to the water pump, correct?

Have you tried Max Merrit or Seattle Packards?

They both should have rebuilt ones available on an exchange basis.

Otherwise Terril Machine in Texas rebuilds them. But you'd have to send it and wait for it come back.

Joel Ray (Patrician Industries) also had remanufactered 51-54 water pumps
in boxes. I bought one at Hershey a few years ago and have it on the shelf (just in case).

He may have had other reman pumps as well.
