Does anybody know of a suitable switch conversion for the momentary off/on brake light switch for the 1929 that fits the box that holds the switch.

Why do you need one? Probably the old switch is repairable.

Mind posting a photo of the problem?

No but I’ve repaired various types of switches in the past. A 29 has mechanical brakes so I would not imagine it to be that exotic. That’s why a photo would be helpful.

I don't recall anyone ever mentioning or even posts showing photos of an early brake light switch. There have been some questions and photos of the backup light switch on those early models though. Something like the modern switch retrofit Kev did on his 37 to incorporate a back up light switch similar to the early factory item used on other transmissions might possibly be able to be done for a brake light if something can't be found that would work in the stock enclosure.

The illustrations in the 24-29 parts book do not show enough detail of the switch or enclosure. Other than it should be adjusted to actuate when the pedal is depressed 1 1/2 inches, I found nothing at all in the 29 SM on how it mounts, actuates, or any other distances or limits the plunger has to travel. Without photos or dimensions it will be hard to suggest something.

Electrically, it does appear that an ordinary normally open push button switch would work if your existing switch is beyond repair. There are some heavy duty starter and horn switches on Amazon similar to this one (which might even be able to be retrofitted for a reverse light) that might be suitable for your brake light. Without knowing more details it is just a guess though.

In a worse case scenario and nothing fits the enclosure or your existing switch has missing pieces or is too far broken to fix, there are modern mechanical brake light switches designed to be operated by various linkage or pedal pieces. One of those might be able to be disguised or hidden to do the actual work while the original is still in place just for show.

Thanks for the replies, I have over fifty years experience on Series One to Seven Packards my switch works fine I was seeking to know if anyone knew of a more modern type that could be used if they have recently restored a car. If you know the switch, you know the switch.

It would have been better to start with this info. I can’t count how many times somebody makes a post asking what modern component they can swap in for something with no other context. Usually said item can either be purchased or repaired for much easier than swapping in something different. Of course there are exceptions, which is why I was asking.

My question was directed specifically at those who would know the component from their own personal experience of restoring one or rebuilding one. You either know the part or you don't know the part. With advances in technology there may be an alternative this is what I was hoping to find out out. To date no result so I will move on and enjoy my 1929 Series 6 Club Sedan. Best Regards
