I believe some air cleaners, particularly those on some of the high dollar prewar models are gloss black but I don't think the stock cleaners Packard used postwar were finished that way. Most everything I can remember seeing was semi gloss and going with that finish might help the repairs be less noticeable..

Thanks Howard. It's a high end car, but not a detailed show car. I won't be showing for judging points, so I won't switch horses at this point. I can always do it down the road if I get ambitious. I don't think the engine bay has ever seen any restoration to it. I believe the air cleaner may have been painted before, and as you mentioned it was not gloss.

It looks like you did a good job of getting rid of the dents! As far as welding equipment, you really just need stud welder which is inexpensive and very easy to use.

Thanks for the follow up. It looks like it’s going to turn out nice. Mine is a 1937, and I painted a gloss black and I’m really happy with it. I may, one day, tackle the one dent in mine, but it is a really low priority for me. I’m just going to enjoy my car for a while now that it’s out of the shop.

Pre war senior satin lacquer black. Just a hint of gloss. That comes from some very old timers of years ago.
