I have a 1940 110 engine available. Excellent condition but assembly required.

The 1940 engine has the advantage of fitting the car. Beyond that, the 110 sixes are excellent engines, with adequate power and torque, exceptional smoothness and quietness, and excellent durability. They have forged steel crankshafts, alloy blocks, full pressure lubrication, and steel-backed insert bearings.

There are several factory service letters covering putting later engines in earlier models as authorized replacement engines when the supply of earlier replacement engines was exhausted.

These covered putting the post-war 6 cyl motors in the prewar 6cyl cars, and using using the 288/327 motors in pre-war models equipted with 8 cyl engines.

You'll find those via the Service Index feature here on the website.

As others have said, there isn't physical room to put a Packard 8 cyl motor in the engine bay of a 6 cyl car.

Not that it applies in your situation, but the later 51-54 8 cyl motor blocks were drilled so they could be used with either front or side engine mounts. This was done so they could serve as service replacement motors for the 1950 and earlier cars.

I'm not sure what this means as the 1951-1954 engines all mounted at the sides but required the front plate, hardware and mount from an earlier engine if it was to be used pre-1951. There was no extra drilling for backward-compatibility. The issue would have been if using a later transmission as they were not drilled and tapped for the mounts that pre-1951 needed.
