No, or I would have said so! It’s sitting at home in my driveway waiting for some something pieces that were outsourced for repair before I can look at it but with only a sloped driveway in which to work, I may have to transport it to my Oregon shop. I did take off the driver’s valve cover and see nothing amiss there but need to remove the heater box first on the other side in order to access that valve cover.

So I am not entirely sure what the next steps are, any suggestions? Got the valve covers off (a pain to do) but I do not see anything amiss. There are no loose rods, and it does not look like it is missing any parts up top.

Would the next thing be remove the rocker shaft and see if all the valves level off at the same height?

It looks pretty dry in there. Or did you wipe out the oil? You should see some oil going to the drain.
The oil comes up through the rocker lever shaft bracket, though the rocker lever shaft and out to the rockers. The shaft has often been found to be clogged.
You should consider removing the rocker shaft, pulling the plugs and cleaning it. If you do also make sure the holes in the shaft and the passages in the rockers are clear and check the wear on the rockers and valve tips.

So that is interesting you mentioned oil. This engine was rebuilt maybe 800 or so miles ago? I dont have the odometer or the maintenance log in front of me to verify the mileage but I can only assume it was rebuilt properly. I havent had any engine issues since getting this on the road in 2023. When these photos were taken the engine hasnt been run for over a month. Would you still say there should be oil in there? Never really dove into a packard engine to know what it should look like and to be honest, I was kind of questioning where the drain holes in the head actually were. Because taking the valve cover off of an old mopar there is oil everywhere.

So I removed the rocker shaft mounting bolts and the bottom part of them were covered in oil. I wasnt able to remove the shafts completely from the engine due to the heater/AC blower preventing from removing the last bolts. but I did capture some pictures:

That is a ruler across the valve retainers. This is showing that the #4 intake is not fully closing. So the head at least has to come off to address what ever issue is there. With any luck it didnt contact the piston and the entire engine doesnt need to be removed, but we will see. It may also appear that I need to dive deeper into an oiling issue that may have done some damage.
