i wish......house flooded, cost me 2grand deductable.....just don't have money right now.....and i have pretty much done everything i can do myself.

i am going to attempt to rebuild the trans myself with the kit from kanter, but that is 1300 bucks. the drive shaft has to be done and the motor is all together another story.

i could work on other little things, but i am ready to move onto the powertrain. i still want to get some new things done before salado next year though, i just don't know if i will have the powertrain all done or not.

i am sad about it.......

Sorry to hear about that Henry. Times certainly are tough, and a flood doesn't help either. Hang in there, you have a young family to watch over and your awesome Packard will be there when your ready.

Chin up!

Sending you happy Packard thoughts as we speak.

I'm sorry to hear about the unfortunate house situation. Those situations unfortunately always arise at the wrong time. I do wish you the best of luck in getting things back to normal.

I also wish you the best of luck on rebuilding the tranny and engine, but based upon the work you have posted here, I suspect you will be able to do an excellent job. Your posts have been a kick in my rear end to meet your standards!!

Keep up the good work!!

Well, i did some work finally. i have been off the last couple of weeks and have been getting things around the house straight.

finally decided to at least clean so parts up a bit.

used my new 2600psi gas powerwasher and that thing will cut through just about anything, including my hand ;0( ouch! don't worry it is healing now. ;0)

weird thing about the transmission. the center part is the correct color, the tail shaft and bell housing are red.....weird. also isn't the 55 solid steel.....so....why is the bell housing aluminum, must be a 56 bell housing then??

i also powerwashed the driveshaft.....stripped it pretty much done to nothing in some spots. i can't get that peg to press out the end of the shaft though....i guess i will have to take it somewhere with a hydrolic press.

enjoy the pics......just so you know there will be more to come. i figured i would try to fix the trans myself. i don't think anyone has really documented that, except Packard. follow along with me and we will see how hard/easy it is to do. LOL!

sorry i have been gone so long, but such is life i guess....

later dudes

Hank

Glad to see you back.

Trans pretty simple-even I can do it- and some real experts and pros are here to help if you get stuck. Very important thing is the proper tools when replacing bushings so you don't nick, scrape or gouge anything they have to seal against. They (and their corresponding shaft surfaces) are probably the most important yet overlooked pieces in trans when comes to having proper pressures & function. Have a good read thru the service manual on some of the tools needed. Several of them such as spring compressors and locking clamps are easy enough to make and will be needed because some of the springs are vicious.

The bellhousing is aluminum because they all were. The tailshaft should be too, but it looks like your's is cast iron, and I've never seen that before. It's highly possible with all the different colors on your trans that it's been rebuilt in the past, which is a GOOD thing!

yeah, i have just been reading over the manual. one day there probably wont be anywhere to send this thing to get rebuilt, so i figured, might as well do it myself and learn about it. HH i know i can count on you ;0) and there is alot of experience on this board, so i think with all that i can get through anything! ;0)

okay, so i dug into it tonight, almost got all the way through the initial take down.

as you can see i bent one of the tubes trying to get it out, i will need a new on of those at some point....oops. this transmission is very nasty, stinky, and again nasty!

i don't know if you can tell from to pics but it looks like the insides were painted black at some point or when it was new. i don't really know. kinda silly i would say since the trans fluid will eat the paint and obviously it has.

on of the bands was worn badly, the other seemed decent. any ideas on how to take those tubes out, in the manual it shows the guy using a pair of needle nose pliers......well that isn't happening! i really don't want to mess up the ones going to the trans fluid pump. that is the step i stopped at, because i can't seem to get them to budge at all.

the bell housing was held on by all AP nuts and only one castle headed nut, which i thought was strange.

sorry for all the pictures, but i really really wanted to document this, i have more, but these are the basic ones.

thanks,

Hank
