Packardv8- Those are the phillip head screws that hold the top trim piece that goes over the door panel. I ran out of baggies to bag & tag hardware on that door so I just put everything back into the holes they came out of.

Since both cars are fairly early production and doors were involved, wonder if it is an inspector as Clipper 47 says. IIRC, mention is made in the Packard books that early 55 production cars had tremendous fit and quality problems involving the doors to the extent some wouldn't close at all. I think it went on for quite some time until the bugs were resolved. Suppose it would be too much to hope for any signs of rework.

I've found all manner of notes written on scraps of paper stuffed in the oddest of places by factory workers. Usually deep inside the dashboard...things like "I love you" "Help, I'm trapped in the factory" "What are you doing reading this? Get back to work!"

And then there's the large fender washer that was dangling on a piece of mechanic's wire buried INSIDE a quarter panel. This is not an urban legend as I saw it with my own bloodshot eyes. Can you imagine the nightmare the original owner and dealer went thru trying to chase down the intermittent odd noise? LOL!

Try this one on for size, from a 1946 Ford Tudor I just got yesterday and that will be on eBay soon, I wonder if the rumor that my uncles (whom I got it and several other cars from) told me that it was an old cop car was true??>:

Many cop cars and even taxicabs came with smaller generator pulleys so that the charging system would have an output at prolonged idle speeds in order to keep up with the load of the 2 way radio and extra lights.

There may be also special serial or model numbers that denote cop car status.
