I am just about done reading the history of Hudson for a second time. One thing hat really jumped out at me was the domination of the Hudson in NASCAR between 1951 through 1954.

In that period of time Hudson won 78 races compared to the second place Oldsmobile which won 43 races.

One thing that helped Hudson was the body was lower and thus better roadability the most cars of the time. Hudson did a lot of tweaking of the engine to get more power. race on Sunday improve on Monday which Hudson did

Yeah, the Flock brothers just stuck it second gear and kept it floored. Everyone else just ate dust. But these were real STOCK cars - not the shells they run today. I bet there would be a big audience for real stock cars today.

Tim Flock won his first race in a Hudson on November 11, 1951 at a 100 mile race in Atlanta.

Hi

The wins in Hudson had more to do with the roadability and lower center of gravity of the Step-Down Hudsons versus the competitors than the engines.

Nice that Hudson had one last hurrah before oblivion!

The engine in the cars that ran the NASCAR races was a special package labeled 7-X "severe usage" (code name for racing), they had a higher compression ratio than the grocery-getter engine.
Anyone could order this package when they orddered their new Hudson, if they knew about it.

The 7X was a LOT more than higher compression. It was a 232 head on the 308, larger valves, VERY deep valve reliefs, a hotter cam, and a LOT of internal massaging done to the crank, lifters and lifter bores, and rods. It really was a special engine, and I'm convinced that some of those tricks can be done on the Packard straight eights.

In 1951 Hudson placed first in 12 of the 41 NASCAR races that year.

Yes, but according to our new member the valve reliefs are not needed. Anything that saves me money in machining is a good thing, so I won't be doing that on my engine. I WILL do the standard port-n-polish though. Smoothing up those ports are a no brainer.
