Starting problem

Its been so darn long since I worked on a car, besides plugs and filters, I sometimes wonder why I keep all the tools around. Anyway, I have a 1948 super eight that wants to start, then dies. I have good battery, good gas, good fuel pump, good starter but when I turn the key, hit the pedal, she turns over nicely and at the exact instant the engine begines to fire up, the starter disengages and the engine shuts off. If this was my old 72 Duster I would immediately look for the open ignition resistor in the starting circuit, but since a 6v does not have one, is something in the ignition/starter circuit failing and shutting me down. I'm at a loss what to look for.
Any help would be appreciated

But I'll leave any technical advice to the acknowledged experts and instead make a request of you. Could you please include your '48 in the Owner Registry, together with a pic, any known history and how you acquired it?

Another place to check is the starter switch on the carburetor. If it is worn it could barely be making contact and the shake of starting could break contact. Take a push button starting jumper and bypass the switch. IT may very well isolate your problem.

By good spark I assume you used a spark tester,or at the very least bare wire to block.The spark must jump at least 1/8 inch.The spark MUST be blue not yellow.Seeing grounded spark plugs spark proves nothing.Also take the points out and check them, they could be badly pitted.They might look good in place but could hide a mack truck between the contacts.
