Hi Henry: Just ran across your blog and want to encourage you/beg you to abort this tranny. I notice in the picture of the torque convertor that the inner shaft does not protrude beyond the outer shaft. This normally sticks out 5/8 inch or so; there has to be a major disaster inside for that to be true.

The black coating inside your case is not paint, it is varnish caused by major overheating. Warning, warning Will Robinson. Abort Mission.

I have built dozens of these things and would not attempt yours, tho I applaud you for the noble effort. If you don't find a unit you like, I have several 55s to choose from which I'd let you have cheap 'cause I like how you are doing your project.

i see what you mean, as illustrated in the attached photo. i see the shaft sticking up and mine is obviously the opposite and sunk in. what do you think is the problem with that.

i will take it apart soon and display the results.

i also sent you a PM.

thanks for looking at my blog and for the help.

Hank

As tempting as a cheap '55 trans sounds, I still recommend using a '56 Ultra. They cost the same to rebuild and the '56 is a lot better unit.

I've heard that there's more than one way to skin a cat, so this attempt of making a fully locked-up converter doesn't surprise me. MY GOD!! That's supposed to turn separately from the rest of the converter! Who and why would they even think of doing that????

On another note, now we know why the trans is burned up, someone tried to drag race your car!

Repeat after me: "Ultramatics are NOT drag racing transmissions..." "Ultramatics are NOT drag racing transmissions..."

Sorry to see that Hank. I have an extra torque convertor you can have for FREE. Just PM me, and you can have it for the shipping cost from Oregon to Texas (UPS Ground)

I also have another Transmission out of a '55 400 that looks very clean. Contact me if you are interested.

That and all the other stuff sure does explain why your driveshaft turned over with the engine when you first got it. Hard to imagine what other indignities the car has suffered. Maybe you ought to keep the number of the fellow with engine and trans handy.

i have decided that i really want to keep this thing as much original as i can, which means, even though it may not be the best, keep it with a 55 transmission. i want to beable to hold a magnet to it and say, yep it is all 55 under there, even if the 56 trans would be an improvement and weight savings (not trying to drag race it, like other people before me.)

Ross says that the very early production 55 had the non aluminum tail shaft too, which i have and goes with the production date of early March 55 for my car.

PortlanDon, PM sent, and man you are one gracious dude! i cannot believe the overwhelming support i have experienced on this board. you guys must want to see this thing roar to life as much as me to be offering such things for free!

i really just need a 55 transmission that with the parts i have and the new one, i can make one good one to use.

Turbo....that was what i thought. some dumbass trying to drag race it...indicative of my torched hole in the frame for the dual exhaust. OMG! freaking MORONS! thanks GOD i am restoring this car to it's glory days, surely it will treat me well when i am done......surely.

HH, yeah, now that you mention it it makes perfect since why the engine was so dang hard to start, cause it was trying to turn this shitty trans over with it. bastardos! also that guy with the motor/trans...it is a 56 trans.

Later dudes,

Hank

Don't worry Henry! We'll find you one, and if I was you I'd put a '56 trans in it, they're a LOT better than the '55 and a direct bolt in. Also, if you come across one and it's from a Senior car, I have the correct driveshaft flange for a Junior, so you won't have to hunt one down. '55s are different.

what about 55 senior trans to 55 junior car...same? or is it only the 56 senior to junior that needs this flange you talk about?

thanks,

Hank

Hank,

You already have the correct flange. Possibly one of the few parts worth salvaging from your transmission. It will bolt up to any 1955 or 1956 transmission tail shaft. The difference is between the Packard and Clipper models with the Packard using a larger diameter u-joint.
