Clean up the bore. DO the bores including the sleeved bore appears to have wear on them or does any of them appear to be NEW bores????? Be careful, some sleeves are ruff cast on the INNER wall of the sleve to be bored after pressing into place.

Look at variations in the cleaned surfaces between 'sleeved' and non-sleeved bores.

thanks for the input guys, as always. not going to move on this block...will be taking it back and picking up the 2nd block that was available to me by Mike. Thanks Mike!!

Mike really is a great guy! Helped me so many times now i don't know what i would do without him!

a thought that has been enveloping my mind since the day i saw my car....and even more so after seeing the 54 posted recently on Kev's blog. i am seriously considering putting the body back together with the oringal patina and paint that is on there.

i don't really care that this is obviously not gonna be all prestine and that i will save me tons of money. i just think it would be damn cool!

i don't want a rat rod thingy, i just want something with the originalality intact. its only original once after all and with the fresh frame under it and all the good mechanicals....man it sure will drive nice even though it wont look perfect.

i don't know.......just thinking out loud.

my thoughts would be....nice motor and accessories....and new interior....but original paint on the outside. new rubber etc too obviously.

try not to flame me too bad lol!

Hank

If the paint is mostly intact it might shine surprisingly well, but if there are large bare spots or surface rust areas & scratches then you might want to rethink since those will only get worse.

the only bare spots are on the tops of the front fenders....a few on the hood and top. the rest is still there.

i took some NUFinish to the trunk in one spot and it shined up really nice.

hmmmmmm....just a thought....not in stone yet. i think i may just be in love with the idea of it right now....not ready to commit yet....hmmmmm

see page 1, first post for picture.

got the heads back from the shop today. weird...one of my heads is 1/21/55 the other is 3/21/55. how odd. and man that is one early head!

they sure do look nice. seats in, guides in. valves fit perfectly and positive seals to boot! i have to push them on before i reassemble everything. just waiting on the parts to be ready to ship from Jack.

enjoy

Hank

Looking good. I still think with all the confusion then and castings done by outside vendor, they just grabbed whichever part was closest. A couple of months between doesn't seem too bad.

Looking good Hank - great progress.
I agree with Howard - those dates seem close to me. Remember those heads started to be made in 54. Good to see you making headway.

Slick looking heads, Henry.

I'm glad you passed on that block. It looked pretty rough, plus starting with a sleeved block is just asking for more problems, IMO. Interesting discussion about boring and sleeving, though.

Re the paint. I looked again at your #1 post, and the first thing I thought is Scary! I mean, leaving it JUST the way it is, and not cleaning it up would give it a real "Christine" look. You could drive it that way for a while until you felt like painting it. Why not have it both ways?

Keeping with the Christine theme, when people ask why interior, frame and engine are brand new and the body is still old, you can just tell them "Shh, she's fixing herself, don't make her mad."

yeah i think that other block he has will be better, i just had my son with me that day and didn't have time to take the cam out of it and stuff like that. so i had to go with this one at first, but neither of use noticed the sleeve.

i think i would polish the old paint, but it would be kinda hard to polish rough rusty parts LOL!! and i also forgot i punched holes in the front fenders where the rust was when i was trying to check for weak spots.....so that might be kinda weird rolling around with holes...LOL! idk....well see what flights my fancy when the time comes.

it was no biggie on that block. i was just glad mike was there to help out! Thanks Mike! ;0)

right now i have a task ahead of me on my Z3....the back window ripped finally after 14 years of service.....a new window alone....300 bucks.....so i bought a new top aftermarket with new window for 350. not on my plans, but ah well....so i get to work on that now. took the old top off last night and got the frame out for cleaning and preping for new top.

later dudes,

Hank
