The previous owner routed the speedometer cable thru what appears to be the old location of the heater in the firewall. Should it go there, or thru the large rubber grommet at the top of the firewall, with the other wires?

Goes through the large grommet as the ignition cable.

Checked under my 39 and the cable goes through a hole which can be seen under the driver side fender where the fender and the body comes together.

Every 39 I have seen in person and in factory photos routes the speedometer cable through the firewall grommet. The speedometer cable comes from the passenger side of the rear of the transimssion, forward along the x-member of the frame, up the firewall and in.

MellowYellow: is it possible you saw the jacketed park brake cable on the driver's side? It looks like an enlareged speedometer cable and enters through a hole in the body in the area you pointed out. Perhaps I am wrong.

You were right and I was wrong. I was looking at the brake cable.
