apparently i'm just batting 1000 today.

i can't remember if the pin is floated in the piston or if it is floated on the rod. anyone know of the top of their head. i can't seem to find this in the engine manual.

the first piston we did...there was no way one could push the pin in the rod by hand. we had to press it in and out the other side was some copper shavings. the pins came with the pistons and the rods.

the next piston i did i was able to push it all on by hand easily.

the next...nope...gonna have to press it on. i even tried heating the end of the rod...nope wont go in...will have to be pressed.

any thoughts there.

Floating and since you heat the piston, not the rod guess it floats more in the rod. If there was an oversized pin and the rod bushing didn't get burnished in or reamed for that size pin, it might be causing your tight fit.

Thanks Howard, i have read all of this and i can tell you that the rod is not going to move on the pin on the first one we did. it was a VERY tight fit on the rod. the pins fit snug on the pistons themselves though. i would say palm fit on them...but NO WAY that first pin was going to go in finger push on the rod.

the second one i did....was just as describe, fit fine by hand.

the next one....it was not going in by hand. i did not proceed after that until i could ask on the board.

i'm getting tired.....i have spent so much time/effort/money/waiting on this thing. and it is just seems to not want to go together.

i will also ask Jack about these pins/rods since i bought them from him.

If there are pin locks, then both the piston and rod are floating. If there are no pin locks, then the rod & pin are press fit, floating in the piston.

there are pin locks on all of them. there is a groove for the pin lock on each side and all my old pistons have them.

Well, this is a new one on me and so it was my mistake.

After conversation with Henry, it seems I sent him a set of used standard bore 374" pistons, some of which had oversized pins.

This came about because I sorted through three or four 374"s, choosing the pistons with the best skirt dimensions.

In all the years I've been pulling apart these engines, I've never seen a standard bore engine with oversized piston pins. Anyone else ever seen this?

My apologies to Henry, as I should have caught the anomaly before I sent him the pistons.
