I have some folks looking for me on their shelves, but were asking spline count and other dimensional questions. Does anyone have the proper dimensions for a left Super Eight axle?

Thanks

Hollander gives 34-1/4 for right, 30-1/8 for left, and 10 splines. No further info.

When I broke mine back in 1999, I scoured the country with no success - even places like Axles Unlimited kind of laughed when I told them what I was looking for. I finally located and purchased an entire rear end assembly including brakes and drums from McGowan Bros. up in CT. I suspect you may have a tough time finding an axle, may even have to consider having one made, but if McGowan is still in business (only 1 of the 4 brothers still alive, IIRC), they'd be a great place to inquire. And a fresh call to Axles Unlimited would be a good idea as well. I assume you've already been to the "usual suspects".

I found an axle today in a basement full of Packard parts. Visually looked correct so I took it home and its the same as mine! 10 splines and 30 1/8th. Bearings still on and look great. Will get it cleaned up and installed after Hershey.

With the rarity of your axle, I suggest not throwing it away. Find a good shop and have it repaired for a back-up. Perhaps a driveline shop that usually welds driveshafts would be a good place, if you can't find a good tractor repair shop.

The axle in the 734 speedster broke in southern Alabama during a 10,000-mile trip around the U.S. in 1995. Before a replacement arrived via UPS, a tractor repair shop welded the axle back together. Almost 17 years later, the repaired axle is still in the car.

Owen,

If the McGowans you dealt with is associated with McGowans and Knight, they are still in business. They are off main street in Watertown, CT.
