Hi Gang,
I got a call from my mechanic today about my starter (stripped connection between the Solenoid & Starter) and the tail shaft on my transmission leaking. Naturally, with the starter out, I again didn't get to take my car for a test drive.
I was able to supply the starter part by taking a spare '55 starter out and took the Parts Manual to identify exactly what they needed to stop the leak. Turns out its the seal at the very end of the tail before the drive shaft spline is inserted - or Part # 3.678. When I got home I went on line at look at the website of the usual suspects but couldn't find that seal for sale by it's self.

Any ideas where I can find the # 3.678 seal?

Alternatively, if you're feeling adventurous, you might try to match up the specifications to find a seal that's less pricey on-line or locally.

Apparently that seal (P/N 333546) was used by Packard from 1939-1956 on various transmission applications. Here are the specs for the seal from the truly helpful utility section of the 1935-1941 parts manual (Group 50). Note: I'm pretty sure the blurry notation says +/- .002 DIA

This group is GREAT

Using JD's number 333546, it crosses to a SKF 16189 and is available at Napa for about $30. At that price, maybe cheaper at Max or other places.
