I lifted my body by myself with an engine hoist in front and a hi lift in back without bracing. It seems to have survived intact. It was lowered onto a wheeled platform so I could roll it around the garage.

EDIT I'll post picts separately. Didn't want to put my car on your project.

just wanted to post up a pic of the valves in my motor.

had some hard plastic laying around in there a friend tells me that is from the valve stem seals.

Hank

They were originally fairly soft rubber. Can't tell for sure but looks like your engine never updated with baffles. Maybe start looking for a set for when you re assemble.

okay seriously....someone needs to come up with a book or something that shows newbies like me about the upgrades/mods/etc....that packard did. also what things to change or convert to make them better.

if it was all in one place half of the questions i ask would be null...i could just look in the book....a simple this is what you should do when you rebuild your motor, would be great!

like this part from this ford motor can be substituted etc...

is that too much to ask.....;0)

not upset...just wondering why there is all this knowledge but it doesn't exist in one location for this subject.

You're right, it doesn't exist other than the tech bulletins and service counselors Packard and Studebaker issued. Most of those are here on the website. There is a vast amount of knowledge left over that is locked in the heads of many of the longtime fans. You younger guys do have the advantage there though because most of us learned before material or the web was readily available--most by the experience and oops, better not do that again method.

As to whether these baffles really are necessary and solved any problems, there are some real engine experts online so would defer to any one of them that frequent.

what i mean is it would be nice to not have to weed through a junk load of service bulletins just to get to the ones you want to look at. i think it would be nice if there was a package for just motor, or just transmission or etc...

like this is the document you look at if you are going to rebuild your motor and these are the thing you should do while you have the motor out etc.....so you don't miss something that is buried in the service bulletins. i have printed out most everything from this site and have them in two HUGE binders in the garage.

maybe i should just put together my own packet....but i don't know what i am doing or if i am missing something since i have never rebuilt the motor or have any knowledge of what improvements apply or updates, etc....

does this makes sense....i know the website is a one stop location for this material, but one could save ALOT of time if it was categorized or something. the newer generation needs to have access to this knowledge in the mind. the internet is great and that is what the newer generation uses, so we need to take that information and put it into a usable format. some people would love to spend hours looking through service logs, but some would rather the people that have experience put the information in a more time friendly, usable format.....as in.....when i want to rebuild my motor...i would look in the document that says this is what you need to do when you want to rebuild your motor.....first....do this to the oil pump for better pressure....second do this to valves.....third.....here are the service bulletins for your motor....fourth do this blah blah blah and so on.....

one could even do this for the other parts of the car.....

what i am saying is i don't want to miss something on my car because it was buried in a service bulletin somewhere, only to find out about it after i have already done the work and put the motor back in the car that is now painted with a really expensive paint job.....

i would do it myself.....but i have very limited knowledge of this....but i do know how to do the computer stuff....if the knowledge was there i would do it myself in a heart beat.

i know Kevin has it sorted by year of car....but lets take it further and do year by car and subcategorize that by what you should do to the motor....what people have figured out that works better, like the HEI or the modded oil pump, etc....

sorry for rambling.......not trying to start any trouble.....

later,

Hank

Hank -

Even service manuals for today's cars, which read more like they were written by a lawyer, don't cover everything. This is why automakers have for decades, published monthly newsletters (like Packard's Service Counselor series) and periodic bulletins (like Packard's Service Technical Bulletin series).

Speaking from personal experiences, I can tell you that GM, for the past several years has been publishing all service manual and bulletin and (recall) campaign information exclusively in an electronic, paperless, format. That information is made available to dealers as a searchable database, but even that isn't 100% in its coverage.

However, what we have scanned and collected here at P'Info is strictly in JPEG format - meaning you can't do a keyword search of the pages. One would have to go back through and rescan everything using OCR which would be much, much more than duplicate work. It took plenty of Sunday afternoons for me just to scan the V8 parts book in JPEG format.

Moreover, OCR technology is not as good/simple as what the computer industry would like you to believe. Some of the software I've seen in years past had to be trained for subtle variations in printing between documents to avoid errors in intepreting the characters. Yet, even that didn't alleviate the need to proofread the resulting text, which takes a lot of time. Then, there are formatting issues of trying to get the stream of digitize information into a readable (never mind original) format. I know that it was plenty of work to do that with just a few historical performance magazine article for The Packard V8 Club website.

However, perhaps we can meet you halfway with something that I'll pick up with in your new thread on "suggestions about categorizing and website content".

just a few things to update on.

i got the front windshield out, after crumbling away the seal that had turned into rock almost.

got the windshield wipers off....man what a design...i hope i can see from the pics i took how to put the cables back on the correct way, if not i sure hope someone will know how to tell me.

all that is left is the gas tank and the body/frame bolts.

once i get the shed put up in the backyard i can move some of the parts out there to make room in the garage for more pressing issues. like moving the interior out there since i am not to that point yet, etc...

enjoy the pics.

Hank
