Wonder if the fabric or cardboard deteriorated and was removed or maybe a plain Clipper piece was installed over it. I do remember the sun did a job back there. That Patrician fabric I had was rotten and so was the top of seat back.

The rest of the interior is original and it doesn't look like the rear shelf was ever disturbed.

Parts book Group 31.4609 shows the same number 463246 for Clipper and 400 two door hardtop models. Patricians have a different part number.

Thanks for the additional info. I continue to be amazed how much more refined the 56 apparently was--even to mundane detail things like a cardboard vs finished or upholstered package shelf.

My 5587 paint code MR, trim code 81 which I believe to be original has a plain coloured panelboard rear shelf with no covering just an offset grill for the rear speaker. Its not very visible in the attached picture. Also a picture of the original headlining.

Here we go!

Just took delivery of 5 yards of material from SMS Auto Fabrics yesterday. From everything I've read and been counseled on, this is the most original-like available for 5587's with trim code 84 (black cloth). Now to get it in there and integrate it with the the other materials for that special l@@k. I think the gold thread (lemay?) will contrast nicely with the Packard's gold colored dash board as opposed to the greyish material the previous owner put into the car many years ago.

Will keep you posted.

Kevin, looks like your fabric is dead on the money. Here is a picture of my original interior 55 Four-Hundred. I'm glad to know the fabric is so close as I need to replace the driver's seat bottom (the top is still in plastic!).

I have a 55 400 with an original but well worn interior. The shelf covering under the rear window consists of two layers. The bottom looks like builders felt, but its not, although it could be used, with a top of the same type of firm cardboard used in door panels. This is colored to match the interior. I have used vinyal spray paint to achieve a near factory appearance.

I covered the badly faded rear package shelf on my 55 Clipper with the indoor-outdoor carpeting used on the floors. Not original, but looks very nice and more finished. A photo is on my project blog: "Adventures with a 1955 Clipper".

Some progress pictures for my 400's interior.

For everyone that posted pictures of 5587 interiors publicly or sent them to me privately, I again thank you all. They have been critically important to getting the seats to appear as close to as original condition as reasonably possible.

My upholstery man has started the endeavor and I dropped by this morning to check on things. The material from SMS is awesome and the seats are breath-taking! My digital camera just doesn't convey the beauty as one's eyes would in person.

Will post more pictures as progress occurs.
