I didn't think California had rusted cars. The ads usually say rust free California car! Was the frame rusted too?

Agree with Kev. Old 'dry' Arizona also eats some cars as well. Both front fenders on my 400 were replaced as well as floor material. The flooring became an issue as my car sat in a field for years without protection and I think the carpet acted as a sponge. If memory serves, I think Craig yanked that car from a high elevation locale in California.

Low elevation and salt air does a job too.
I had a 70 Pontiac GP and in approx 10-12 years spent between SF and Santa Rosa, the section between rear glass and trunk collected water seepage under the vinyl top. Severe rust there and the start of some lower body damage too. My present Packard spent it's life in NorCal bay area and roof metal under Hypalon was gone as was several of the other usual places.
