Windshield Replacement

Currently replacing the windshield and in the upper left corner there is a piece of blue, what looks like upholstery batting, poked in there. Looks period correct and just wondered if that was to make sure no sealant got on the roof liner, or what it might be doing there? There's nothing on the right side.

Roof liner is in great shape, but faded just a little. And it's ONLY 70 years old!!!

I'd take it out and examine to see what it might be and what's behind before drawing conclusions.
Without documents, no telling who or why that's there. Usually when there's only one, it's not factory, unless an installer had to solve a pucker, wrinkle or similar issue. Can't be certain some repair/replace was done.
Some corrosion in the area maybe related but visual circumstantial speculation.

ps: Lots of fading in that cloth. It'll also appear different if you launder (Woolite) a swatch of the dark under trim piece. Filters/collects dust, etc.
People do a lot of weird things and maybe an owner stuffed something. Part of the unknown vehicle history. No internet answers for that.

The other top corner had the same piece of material, except it was white. Seems like it was tucked in there for a purpose, just not sure what the purpose may have been.

New to me windshield installed today, now for the trim. Got a cord stuffed in the gasket and will try installing the upper trim piece tomorrow, which I'm sure is the most complicated piece. But need to eat now................it's the only thing that stops me working on my car!

Undiluted liquid dish soap really helps!

I hadn't thought about that for the trim, I'll slop some on there. Thanks!

That top piece of stainless is a bit tricky, but I think rest should be pretty easy.

Very nice and makes a big difference to the appearance having the trim installed! What did you use to polish the pieces?

I wet sanded out most of the scratches, starting at 800 and working my way to 2000. Then spent a couple hours finishing them up on a buffing machine.

Problem is it looks way better than the rest of the stainless! Oh well, baby steps!

Lots of hours for just this windshield replacement, which was not "just" a windshield replacement.
