Steering gear adjustment

I'm trying to set my steering to spec per the book and am pretty confused on some things. The shims I get, to set the play on the ends, but I don't understand the adjustment to make to get it correct on the middle

The other thing is, my engine is out, would it be easier to remove the assembly and work on it on the bench? I didn't buy a replacement seal but I can get one.

Make the pitman shaft adjustment with the steering box in the straight ahead position. Some play is normal when the steering box is near the left or right stops. There should be no play with it on center. The worm shaft adjustment can be done at any position, I think.

If you set the pitman shaft adjustment with the steering box OFF center, it will bind when turned left or right.

Yes but how do I make thar adjustment? There is a bolt next to the filler plug on the housing that I can loosen, but then it seems like it won't stay in place.

They should be a large star shaped washer that locks that in place.

Thanks Kev, the washer is there, but it doesn't seem to do much to hold it in place.

Anyone remember how to remove it? Obviously it's bolted to the frame rail but what do I do about the steering column and the output shaft of the gearbox?

If I remember right that odd star washer can only lay in one of four positions because the one sides engages a stop/pin/bump on the steering box.

Perhaps that is sheared off?

I think next weekend I will just get it out of the car and go through it. I hate to do that since it's so dirty on the outside and I'll need to clean it, but it seems that's what's needed to adjust it properly. Also a change of gear oil would not hurt I think...

You don't have to remove it. Refer to the shop manual for adjustment procedure.
