If I remember right (havent looked in awhile) it's on the bottom of the block, near the pan, towards the back, between the ribs. One side has the casting number, the other side the date. The starter may make it hard to see.

Good point. I missed the 1951 part so that is end of year. There is a discrepancy on actual numbers produced. Dawes says 15,309 total and sales started Aug 24, 1950. What is engine number? He says 51 production started with J400001 for the 300's.

I just went out to "Mantopia" to check. It's on the driver's side, basically under the starter on the block. Here is a picture of mine, I had to move away the masking, as I have been in the process of painting my firewall.

My casting date is 7/24/54. I must have been thinking of the date that was ink stamped on my heater box for the August date.

It is possible you car was produced, but then sat either on a lot, or at a distribution hub for awhile before it was sold.

The engine number is J406807. Correct for the year. BTW this is what California used as the VIN.

Interesting again. 6807 engines, 3599 sedans by your car build date -- whatever it was. That same engine also used on a commercial chassis but 3200 sure sounds like an awful lot of commercial cars by that time.
