Sorry JD, I was just thinking of 1951 -1954, I should have been clear about that. According to the 1951 factory production codes hydraulic lifters were standard equipment on the 250, 300 and 400, optional on the 200. I consider that a pretty solid reference but I suppose exceptions might have come along. I haven't reviewed the year-by-year engine specs.

I was under the impression (using the engine chart on this site and the 1953 Owners Manual) that the 1953 and 1954 Clipper Deluxe had a 327 with solid lifters. I only have 356's in my garage so I'm out of my depth.

I must correct my prior comments. In checking the 1954 Specifications I see that the 288 and the 327 used in the 5401-5411 had mechanical lifters. The 327 used in the Cavalier (4-bbl version of the 327) and of course the 359 had hydraulics. I did not check to see if 1953 was similar.
