I am convinced that someone must have used a badge/script like this on the trunk based on the spacing. Need to go look inside the trunk lid to see what patching/holes can be seen to confirm. That's the only thing I can think of but even if that were the case, why the script orientation was changed would still be a mystery.

Maybe a dealer-installed badge which was quite a common thing back then, especially if the car went through an Early C Anthony dealership. Even if not, dealers often installed their own badges.

Interesting to know. I did check the underside of the trunk lid and didn't see anything to suggest reorientation of the holes so I'll chalk this up to a Scooby Doo cliffhanger.
