All great ideas. I'll give them each a try in succession. I'm going to try every means possible while the engine is still in, and if nothing works I'll remove the engine and bring it to a professional torch magician.

You shouldn't have to do that. At worst you might have to tow the car to the garage. If you know a friendly mechanic he might even bring his torches to you.

Even if torching out the stud wrecks the threads, you can always use a Heli-coil. I've never had one fail yet.

An OK primer i guess, but I wasn't particularly impressed with technique. No special effort to make sure the drill was perpendicular to the work, no measure of the depth of the original hole and mark on the drill to assist drilling to the right depth, no tap lubricant, and poor tap technique (re chip removal).

I agree that for a basic demonstration of a how-to it is OK but still pretty sloppy workmanship for a supposed professional. Anyone familiar with proper procedures would cringe.

We used Heli-Coils in the Navy. They are good but you can have problems with them. When I broke off head studs on my Model A and was unable to remove the broken off stud I drilled it out to the next oversize, re-tapped the hole and used a Step Stud. I thought this was a better solution than the Heli-Coil.

I agree that Heli-coils have their limitations, though I've had good success with them. Step studs are much stronger, certainly the choice where high strength is needed, for example a main bearing bolt which has the additional challenge of absolute positioning.
