It's the weekend, finally. I'm off tomorrow to pick up my truck from my dads house to bring here. If you were wondering, it is a 1948 Chevy 1 ton truck. Now I'll have two beauties in my garage

Hey everyone. After doing some research I've decided to rebuild the engine myself. I'll know the internal condition once I tear it apart, but would you guys recommend the rebuild kits from Kanter if everything needs to be replaced? If needed I would probably get the master kit, but are they worth it or should I try to salvage some original parts?
Here is what they include BASIC kit Includes: ---- Main bearing set ---- 8 Rod bearings ---- Cam bearing set ---- Oil pump kit ---- 8 pistons with pins and clips ---- Ring set ---- Freeze plug set ---- Overhaul gasket set ---- Timing chain and gear set MASTER kit Includes: ---- BASIC kit ---- plus 16 valve springs ---- DELUXE kit Includes: ---- MASTER kit plus... ---- 16 Valve guides ---- 16 Valves ---- 8 Piston pin bushings

Update: I had some free time so I started to prepare to take the back wheels and drums off. So I took the pin in the axle nut off, which broke , and then went to loosen the axle nut. I thought it would require the breaker bar, but to my surprise, and horror, it required no effort to loosen. So I went to the other side and discovered the axle nut was a different size! The one was 1 1/8 but this one was bigger. It also had no pin! So I'm going to get a bigger socket tomorrow and a hub puller so I will update then.

Bet you the large one was the original Packard nut and the other side was damaged at one time and replaced with something from the hardware store. My 47 is similarly equipped.

Thanks for the clarification. How do you get the front hub covers off? Do you pry them off or is there something special to do? Sorry for the stupid questions I just don't want to break anything.

Just pry them off by twisting a screwdriver inserted between the lip on the cap and the wheel hub. Work the screwdriver around so the cap comes off reasonably straight. If they are really tight you might have to resort to a few taps with a hammer or maybe a rubber mallet at an angle on the end of the cap.
