Someone on here (I think Howard or Packard Don) did something similar but with old nuts&bolts and muriatic acid IIRC.

I would just use whatever small metallic pieces are most suitable and some reasonable cleaning solvent. After some shaking strain the solvent with a funnel and cloth, use a magnet to separate the iron from the junk, and hose it off. Repeat...

I used a large jar of Packard head nuts and washers to do the job on my 1951! It not only cleaned the tank but it also cleaned and phosphate-coated the nuts and washers.
