I am not a betting man, but I would be willing to bet you have a check valve screwed into the base of your carburetor that is feeding your BTV. Follow the rubber hose from the side of the BTV up to the carb. That piece that the hose is connected to is the check valve.

To illustrate Randy's description on finding the check valve, here are photos of the actual items.

Note that V8 valves may be located differently. This photo is of a dual carb setup and valve is considerably to the rear nearer distributor as compared to single carb models.
