Well, yesterday I drilled a 1/16 inch dia hole in the rear main and installed the small roll pin in the cap to hold the seal from rotating. Forming and cutting the seal in the cap was straight forward, but cutting the seal that was up in the block was a little more tricky. It is very cramped between the block and crank, so I cut a razor blade down to about 1/2 inch wide and using a magnet to hold, and a regular screwdriver to push the blade, I was able to make a clean cut on the upper seal. Oil pan is back on also, but not quite ready to start the engine yet. Still have to button up a few things. I'll be Running 10w30 oil since it is winter.
I'm looking forward to driving again!!

Friday I'll be in the garage again, and in addition to testing my rear main seal, I would like to install the stoppers that stop the driver and passenger doors from opening too far. The door stoppers are attached to the body by a pin that is 5/16 inch dia.
Are pins available as standard hardware? I was planning on cutting down and grinding down a 5/16 bolt for this. Anybody either make their own part, or buy a ready made pin?

I cleaned up the oil bath air filter that came with the car. I think this is not an original packard air filter, but is "period correct" I will use this untill I clean, paint and get a support for the propper oil bath air cleaner with the big silencer that goes over the engine.

I added oil until the full mark (red line) and when I installed the upper half of the filter, the steel ring/saucer sits in the oil. This kind of supprised me, but I guess the intake air is supposed to make it's U-turn in the space between the Kapok and the top side of this saucer covered in oil. Anybody know if this is correct?

Anybody recognize what car this filter is originally from? Fits great on the 2bbl, also has a relief on the bottom side for the choke.

That is the oil bath filter they used in 52 and often on Clippers in 53 so you are quite correct already. The one with the big silencer does look cool however. The saucer on the bottom keeps the oil from sloshing when you use your car for drifting and gymkhana.

Thanks Ross, now I remember reading korean war cars had the smaller oil bath air filters.
I used 20w50 oil instead of straight 50 weight in the air filter....Think I should change to straight 50wt, or will that only make a difference when I am drifting on the nurburgring?

Perhaps (probably?) the difference is inconsequential but I think the preferred oil in the air filter would be non-detergent. You want the dirt particles to drop to the bottom of the pan beneath the oil and not be suspended in it.

looking at the weight of the oil at about room temp, 50wt would be 600 cSt, and 20w50 would be about 400 cSt, which is pretty close.
I checked with LiquiMoly, a local german oil company, and they have a straight 50wt which they advertise as good for engines with no oil filter and oil bath (cyclone) air filters...I may try and pick up the 50wt one of these days, but I also think the difference would be very minimal.

Get the 50 weight, it is not expensive and one quart will last about 50,000 miles.

In below freezing temps you can use 30.

The air cleaner is designed so the air enters at the top, goes straight down, and makes a U turn over the oil, throwing any dirt and dust into the oil. The air is supposed to go through a narrow passage, to trap the most dust. If some small dust particles remain they are trapped in the labyrinth of the filter material which is covered in oil.

I have heard of light oil splashing into the intake and burning up but only under severe conditions.

Have thought of using chain saw bar oil, summer weight, which is thick sticky and clingy. I think it might work better than 50 weight which in turn works better than light oil because it stays in the filter matrix better.

A small success today.
Now the people reading from the passenger side of my car will know it is a ClippeR, and not just a clippe_. Thanks Flackmaster for the script. I think I got this from you a few years ago.
Owners manual calls for 20wt in winter and 50wt in summer for the air filter...
