Kev -

I've been sidetracked with outdoor work and family visits over the last couple of weekends, but now that the weather has turned, I'm gonna jump back in on the 51-54 info today. I'm at the point now where I have to annotate the topics, assign categories, etc. - still tedious, but a little more creative process.

Also, as I worked my way back through the years, I've been squirreling away info from 1951 and later publications reagrding earlier Series, and I have the resources to assimilate topics from the SCs and STBs of 1948-1950. Perhaps I should put that info together, as well, but hand it over to someone more qualified with those cars for a final edit.

However, while 55-56 and 51-54 are natural groupings, I'm not sure whether we should have a 46-50 index or one for 48-50 and another for 41-47 (Clippers). Anyone out there have any thoughts on organization of this info?

Perhaps the Service Index grouping should roughly match the Service Manual Editions? Just a thought, as Brian said, feedback appreciated.

For my 2?, 46-50 would be logical. I think there are more similarities than differences and as you said, that is the way service manual is laid out-- even if parts are separate.

Brian/ Kev, I would like to suggest that the 1941-47 Clipper be kept as a separate classification from the 48-50 models.
I agree that while the Clippers share much in common with the 48-50 the 356 engine used in all the 1942-50 Clipper Super Eight and 48-50 Custom models and the Junior 245 six are the only common engines among these years. The 48-50 were sufficiently different (heating, ventilation etc.) that my feeling is that the models should be separate. Just my

Thanks for the input.

Intitially, my thoughts were to have the indices follow the service manual coverage. Of course, I don't know that much about those manuals and cars prior to 1951, and there's always room for an exception.

I always found it odd that while the service manuals cover 46-50, 51-54, and 55-56, the parts books cover 41-47 (Clipper), 48-54 and 55-56. Though the 48-50 Packards are clearly derived from the 41-47 Clipper (as 55-56 are from the 51-54), the first-gen Clippers seem to be in a class of their own - even apart from the last of the prewar Packards.

Once the work on the 51-54 Index is complete, I'll continue building a spreadsheet of topics for 48-50, as we wait to hear from others on this and make a final call, and Kev and others can take it from there.

One thing is clear, before we decide on a structure of indices for other, earlier Series, we'll need additional, prewar editions of the factory service manuals and parts books for consideration. Things don't appear to have been so neatly compartmentalized back then, and it will take group collaberation to make some effective compromises.

Of course, all that work is contingent upon acquiring donations of prewar Service Letters and Technical Letters

In researching the SCs for 1951-54, I noticed that, in addition to the wiring diagrams themselves, they provided a Cable Code and Indentification Chart, which not only cross-references the circuit numbers ot the functon, but also notes the wire gauge - very handy. However, no suich information was provided for the 1955-56 editions.

Does anyone have such a chart for the V8s?

1941-1947 Packard Clipper Master Parts List

Thanks to Dave (Clipper47) for the donation of this content.

Also thanks to AL (acolds) I have the 1945-1950 Service Manual and the 57 Clipper (with 55-57 Studebaker) Parts Catalog in my hands. I just need to get them scanned in. So stay tuned over the next few days. As you can imagine these big books take a long time to scan.

Thanks!
