When I picked up my '54 from the lot it was rotting in for years, the tow truck driver winched it up on the flat bed, rear first. At about it's steepest angle, very old fuel starting pouring out of the front of the car, and down the flatbed. Lets just say the tow driver was not amused. The culprit was a rotten rubber fuel line.

Today, I took of the fuel pump.

The rubber inlet hose was indeed rotten, when I disconnected it from the fuel line and the pump, the cracks where very prominent present.

The screws of the pump wheren't completely tight, but I won't take any risk and will replace it.

The pump is the standard Carter M2198S version.

I had just one difficulty, the metal tube to the fuel filter wouldn't come loose from the pump. The copper nut was blocked ( corroded a bit? ) in the little copper elbow connector. I used the correct wrenches but it wouldn't loose, I think I used a bit to many effort and the copper elbow ( L ) broke.

I have allready searched for such a copper L adapter but I couldn't find any.

Does anybody knows if this is for sale somewhere?

Or can the pump be installed without such a L connector?

Grtz,

Xavier

Any decent auto parts store or plumbing supply house has these fittings, just make sure to get the right thread size on the male end, and that the female end is for an inverted flare fitting.

I think this is what you want and I believe the size is 5/16 x 1/8 but best to doublecheck your car. Here are a couple of places in states but don't know about Europe availability.

Hi HH56,

The pic you added is indeed how it looks.

The inner diametre of the thread in the hole is 12mm = 0.47 inch ?
The outer thread of the male side is 10mm = 0.39 inch ?

Which type do I have to take?

I checked your dimensions and it appears it is indeed the 5/16 tube x 1/8 male pipe. On the go2marine site it is their item 51220.

Hope you can find it over there because it looks like all places over here are fairly low cost for part, but high shipping to Europe (if at all).
