Timing chain and gears.

The '49 288 (H272444) that I bought came without the timing chain. When I picked it up, I figured I could put on the set from my engine, a '54 327 (M31649). The Packard parts list, kanter and Max show a different set of gears for these two engines. The chain and gears physically fit the other engine.

Does anyone know the difference between these gear sets?

As I Remember from some old posts here, the older chain is wider and also has a "deeper" housing around it. I think you should be able to use your 51-54 chain. Hope that helps a bit.

Is the later timing chain cover a little wider too?

The older cover is deeper. I am pretty sure that when you put it together with the narrow timing set, the front seal will not push up against the cover as it should.

If you search the archives for 'Dummy timing chain question' you should find the thread where somebody went through this before. (And as usual the thread went on to all sorts of places)
Can't you use the whole 51-54 chain and cover?
