Timing Chain Removal

Any tips on how to remove the timing gears and timing chain from 1950 288 engine? I've got the balancer and cover off, the timing chain is very loose and teeth are warn. New chain and gears have been ordered, but the old gears are being stubborn and do not want to pry off. - Any tips or "tricks-of-the-traid?

Thanks for any advice!

I assume you removed the retainer on the cam sprocket? If it's still subborn, then use a puller. The two gears have to pretty much move forward together, IIRC the crank sprocket just floats in position, driven by the key.

Not sure if the yellow on the crank surface is just the photo or some buildup. If there is a lot of something like varnish it needs to be cleaned. Any extra thickness could prevent the sprocket from sliding.

This is where having a couple cans of break cleaner and a cleaning brush handy makes for quick work.

Thanks all for the input - very appreciated. The new chain and sprockets came in today and will be installed tomorrow.
