Denny,

Can you add that information to the Paint X-ref. That may be helpful to someone in the future.

Thanks!

I agree that most modern metallic colors use too big a flake. Silberline and Mearl are the flake manufacturers and they sell the flake by particle size and some have colored coatings.

Don't be embarassed by Gremlin Green - my car turns out to be Plastikote Truck Light Smoke over GM Medium Garnet Red.

Gee, Mike,

Your thread has turned into a 'paint chip confessional.'

'Gremlin Green?' and 'Plastikote Truck Light Smoke' over 'GM Medium Game1 Red.' Hummmm...

Seriously, whatever works and comes close enough.

Besides,
"What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun."

Ecclesiastes 1:9

DanL

PS: That font is as close to Gremlin green and GM Game1 Red as I could get in flourescent light.

Folks,

Many thanks for your constructive suggestions. When I purchased the 1940 110 Club Coupe it came as a rolling chassis with body in primer,30 boxes of parts, and the engine mounted on a stand. I was fortunate to inherit several sets of original paint chips including DuPont and Ditzler. The painter I've selected uses modern DuPont paints. My preference for the cars color is Packard Cream (after seeing a beautiful 1941 Darren in the Dayton, OH, Packard Museum). I've looked at both the Auto Color Library (http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/) and the DuPont Color Chip Historical Library (http://pc.dupont.com/dpc/en/US/html/visitor/b/dr/s/color/hcl.html), but neither translates the original lacquer color formulas into modern acrylic enamal paints. This afternoon I looked through DuPont's SpectroColor book that has modern color chips with a hole in the center for color matching. I was disappointed in the limited selection of yellows and that they didn't appear close to Packard Cream, so I feel like I've gone in a circle. Time to cogitate!

No help on the color, but if you're going to use acrylic, use lacquer, not enamel.

Did you ever find a correct modern day color match? I am starting a project and have also selected to do my 37 120 sedan in Packard Cream

I had good luck ordering an Acrylic lacquer from Hibernia. They have formulas for very old paints. Their Dover White (which is really a cream) looks closer than any other ones I have seen.

You might try TCP Global in San Diego. I have had excellent results with them. They have a huge color library and can mix to sample in any type of paint if they don't have the formula already. They can even do acrylic lacquer at a reasonable price. The other option is to take your chip (assuming that it has survived without fading or darkening) and go thru modern paint chip books to find a match.
