Rear shelf over rear seat back and beneath the rear window

Hi to everyone

My car is now at the stage where she is at the trim shop for a new headlining - carpets - furflex around the doors etc.

I have the rear "Parcel shelf" out of the car which is covered in the same "leatherette" at the seats and door cards and I think this is completely WRONG.

I have cleaned up this piece and in so doing noted that the material is stretched and forms a hollow at its center due to the shelf being in two pieces with a metal joining piece at the rear - see the photos.

My queries are 1) shouldn't it be covered to follow the top of the shelf correctly so that it is flat then going up at an angle to the rear window ? 2) Should it be covered in this leatherette or in carpet ? I fancy the latter as it could help in insulation of heat to the cab and also possibly help cut down any drumming noise from the trunk.

Any help much appreciated

Best regards Michael

I'll leave the details of shelf to the experts on that year but do believe carpet would be wrong and maybe not do what you want. Have you considered using something like Dynamat or another of the sound absorbing/insulating materials made today under the fabric or shelf. Many types are available and maybe not the cheapest solution but probably do a better job.

I wish I knew more about the export six, but my Custom has the same wool broadcloth used for the door panels on the shelf. The fabric follows the contours of the shelf without any 'hollows'.

Thanks JD in KC - that answers part of my query - whatever finish I decide on I was right that it must follow the contour of the shelf.

Thanks go too to HH.56

Best regards Michael

Hi Michael

That vinyl/leatherette is also on my 50 rear shelf. Definitely not original, but done during a later restoration. I think the suggestion of dynamat underneath is a good idea. Mayber also use the material you will be covering your seats with?
