What Tranny do I have?

I just got a 48 Willy Wagon. According to previous owner the tranny is either a Packard 409 or a 384, but he is not sure. The only markings on the tranny is "3-28 333571". Looks like it is a 3 speed top shifting tranny with 2 shifting forks and a reverse gear. I have attached some photos to help identification. Any help would be appreciated.

Back-tracking through the parts books, P/N 333571 turns up in the Numerical Index of the 35-41 book (Gr. 3.202). The subsequent application listing is a transmission case, with 4-bolt rear bearing cover, for 17th, 18th, and 19th Series - that is, 1939-41.

Just an aside.I believe Packard made their own transmissions and rear ends. They did not use Borg Warner Trans or Dana rears until the advent of the 56th series.

Precisely. 39-41 non-overdrive short tailshaft 3spd. Small input shaft for 6 & small 8 cylinder engines. Would require different input shaft for Super 8 engines. Would need to know U-joint flange dimension to differentiate whether it came off a 6 or 8 cylinder car.

Do you have the top cover? PIcture please.

"Small input shaft for 6 & small 8 cylinder engines. Would require different input shaft for Super 8 engines. "

Is there significant difference or is it possible to get away with changing clutch disk and pilot bearing to allow interchange between the 6,8 and Super 8??

Yes, quite a difference. The Super 8 requires an 11" clutch, whereas the smaller engines used a 9.5 or 10" clutch. The clutch forks are different such that the different throwout bearing/collar eliminates any chance of switching things around. Trying to mix throwout bearings that will not interface properly with the clutches and input shaft collars results in game over.

flackmaster,

I am hoping to use this with a Chevy SBC 283, would this transmission work with it?

Borg-Warner did make transmissions/overdrives for Packard at least as early as the 22nd series. Visually, they seem to be the same as earlier Packard transmissions of the earlier design top loaders.
