Not the same. Prior to 55, handles are held on by a pin thru the handle and shaft. You have to push the door panel and trim bezel in against a spring that surrounds the shaft. It can be a bit of an effort getting it far enough back to clear the pin. Once clear, hold everything and push the pin out with some kind of punch or round tool. IIRC, it is a 1/8" dia pin.

Actually, I liked the pin system better. If you don't have a shop manual, you don't know how to start the tool in 55-56.
