51 Head Stud Sealant

I am soon to re-introduce all 38 cylinder head studs to my block, and was wondering if anyone can suggest the correct stud sealant for them?

Have asked a few shops and gotten various answers for modern engines, but no solid answer for an older one.

Some recommend various Loctite products but there are so many variants to choose from, and I don't want to end up with 38 studs that will break if they ever need to be removed again (- or eventually leak coolant from the jacket).

Thanks in anticipation!

I've always used gasket shellac, never had a problem, and recommend it highly. Permatex also makes a hardening gasket paste, both should be available at most any good auto parts store. I'd not use the conventional Locktite products for locking threads though they may have a more conventional sealant.

Thanks for this suggestion, appreciated! (It fits well - an old product for restoration of an old car). I have found several favourable write-ups about it, and (rather surprisingly) it should be available at a local store.

It might have been what I used on an engine in the 1960's. I remember dipping the head studs into a thick straw-coloured liquid and then screwing them in. It resembled shellac.

Details at Permatex 20539 Indian Head Gasket Shellac
