I reproduce a heavy duty version of the original "snubber", and yes, I have heard tell of the importance of this unit. If your ends are not STIFF, then replacement is suggested. Do a search using the word snubber and you will see several posts on this subject. Only other armchair comment I can make is shift s.l.o.w.l.y, hesitating in neutral before headed for the next gear.

Did the clutch test, as suggested and it goes into first just fine. I'm picking it up tomorrow and will go for a run to see if things shake out better after the mechanic's last go around. I want to thank everyone for their help and advice. I'll keep you posted.
