Thanks for your suggestions on the retainers. I haven't had another attempt at pushing them in yet - fully occupied with getting the motor finished! I hope they haven't sent me rear clips instead of the front ones . . .

I usually put some white lithium grease in the channel the clip goes in. Can't hurt and it may save you or a future generation from looking for a new clip.

Very sensible idea! I have done that already, it helped the new clips to slide in plus will stop the corrosion. The old clips were very badly rusted, now paper-thin and unusable.
