Wow! An 1899 Packard! I had no earthly idea that any cars much less a Packard from the 19th century had survived. Nothing short of a minor miracle.

The 1899 was donated by Packard to Lehigh University, along with a large grant to the engineering dept., many years ago. For more info on pre-1905 cars you might want to google the "London to Brighton Run" in the UK which is limited to such cars and has no shortage of attendees. The 1899 Model A was out and around and driven short distances at both Lehigh and Warren during the Packard Centennial celebrations and some of us here were fortunate enough to get up close and examine it, see it run, and speak with the curator.

You might enjoy going to John Grundy's website for pictures and information on the early surviving Packards. Click on "pictures" and select the years of interest.

Mr. James Ward Packard donated $1,000,000. to Lehigh Uni. for an engineering laboratory around 1927. He died in 1928. It was the Packard Motor Car Company that donated the 1899 Packard to Lehigh in 1930. As first proposed, PMCC would "lend" the 1899 to Lehigh, but the school wanted complete ownership. So, PMCC agreed, with the provision that the company could borrow it when it wanted to - which it did in 1946 and 1949.

I saw the 1899 Model A on display and driven off of the field at Pebble Beach. This must have been at the 1999 Concours d'Elegance. What a sight and sound!
