BigKev. You're right. Not many big American cars has been sold in Europe.

I will not consider anything else than a 2004r or 700r4. I like the overdrive for the freeway. I just have one shipped over. No problem. The adapter is ordered and on it's way. The only thing I need to know is what I need on all these options on the gearbox:

2004R Options
Edelbrock Carb Linkage [+$34.95]
Holley Carb Linkage [+$34.95]
Detent Cable [+$27.95]
2004R High Rev Governor 5800 rpm - 6000 rpm [+$139.00]
Speedometer - Mechanical [+$49.95]
Universal Transmission Mount [+$14.95]
Universal Dust Cover [+$16.95]
Universal Locking Dipstick [+$24.95]
Universal Throttle Bracket [+$49.95]
Torque Converter Bolts GM (3) [+$10.95]
Lock Up Wiring Kit [+$139.00]
Yoke [+$129.00]
2 Cans Transmission Flush [+$19.95]

High speed governor:
I assume that to mean the governor INSIDE of the trans. A moot point. Unless u plan to start pulling airstream trailers thru the mountains with a 4:56 rear axle at 70 - 80 mph or plan to run 120 to 150 mph at LeMan then i can see absolutely no reason whatsoever for the high speed governor. The OEM 200R4 Governor should be just fine. I mean i have an 89 Caaprice with 305 V8 and 200R$ that i drive 70 to 80 on the Interstate hiway for 200 to 400 miles nonstop ata time.

So the high speed governor makes no sense at all.

Locking dip stick?????? What for???? Just use the oem 200R4 dip stick. Why not??? Unless there is somekind of boddy or engine interference problems due to the conversion.

Traansmission flush????? That is nothing but a joke. (there is a period at the end of that statement).

Won't you also need an adapter to mount the transmission to your V-8 Packard?

Is the transmission kit also from Bendtsen? It says no core charge. Does that price include a complete 2004R transmission off the shelf and they don't want a core back at all or do you supply the trans and put the pieces they send into it?

I had the Ultramatic in my 55 400 replaced two years ago with the 700r GM transmission. WOW! what a difference; the car came alive with more go and better gas mileage than I had ever seen before. I had had 3 Ultras rebuilt-all failed after less than two years, Now I can drive the car without worrying the ultra will self destruct.I do not blame the transmission guys either I just think the Ultra in 55 was just a plain bad design-although I've been told the 56's were much better.By the way if your considering having your Treadle-Vac rebuilt DO NOT SEND IT TO WHITE POST!!!!!! DONT GET SUCKERED IN BY THAT "LIFETIME WARRANTY", a lifetime warranty is only good if your around for it! Send it to Ross Miller in Parkton Md.

KevinAZ also replaced his 55 T-U, but with a 4L60E with a conversion accomplished by Art Butler (now deceased). KevinAZ says the 4L60E is great. I've ridden in his 400 once, but not a very far distance and would say that I like the new tranny too. The 4L60E has gear ratios almost the same as the 700R4. Remember though that the 55 400 has a 3.54:1 rear gear ratio, not 3.07:1 like the 5647.

Ptv: The adapter is ordered from Bendtsen.

HH56: The gearbox is from "TransmissionDepot". (I bought a gearbox from them for my T-bird -66 without any problems.) The tranny is complete and no core charge and came to a total of $1824.40 including shipping and discount.http://www.transdepot.net/

WauhopM: That sounds great. I'm looking for better mileage and the possibility to use engine brake going downhill. Also to get rid of that oil spot under the tranny :)

Craig: I have ordered a 2004R because of what Jack Vines wrote to me: "The 4R-200 has better gear ratios for a big, high torque engine. It's also a slightly smaller package".
