Today I was looking at a freshly rebuilt 1941 senior (356) engine waiting to back into the car. Oil filter was standard on this model and I have no reason to believe that the one on the car isn't the original. The stamped writing around the perimeter of the lid caught my eye and when I looked to see what it said, I was quite suprised. I had expected it to say either Manufactured by Purolater or by AC Division, but in addition to Made in USA and Patents Pending, it said:

PACKARD OIL FILTER
MOTOR IMPROVEMENTS, INC.
NEWARK, NJ.

It does take the standard filter cartridge (the old Purolater P-70FF. Anyone else have this marking on their filter housing?

My filter is stamped on the lid Packard Oil Filter. I can get some better pcitures later as I took this one awhile ago. Also remember this filter has "INLET" stamped on the bottom and "OUTLET" stamped on the side. So even though this came with my '54, and I pretty sure this was a pre-war left over that was either owner or dealer installed.

Kev, why do you think it's a pre-war left-over? And not factory installed? The type font of the marking seems similar or the same as the one I observed.

Because of the reversed inlet and outlet ports. This, and it's overall appearance is identical to one of the pre-filter that was discussed in a prior thread a week or two ago. Plus it was not plumbed for Bi-pass operation.

My 41 Clipper had an after market oil filter on it when I bought it. I replace it with a period Packard filter.

The insert filter that fits it is a "Fram Oil Filter C134PL."
I find them at farm supply stores for $5.00-7.00.

NAPA has them too. . . NAPA 1080. I guess it was a standard size for many early filters. Why they got away from an industry standard, I'll never know.
