Hi folks,

I am getting reading to install the front crankshaft seal, the strange cork thing in a spring-loaded holder that seals against the timing cover.

I have three questions:

1) It seems like the old cork piece was glued into the holder, maybe with something like Permatex or Aviation Form-A-Gasket? Any suggestions here?

2) Should I install it with a layer of grease on it, or assembly lube, or?? Should I soak it in oil first?

3) The cork piece that came in the gasket kit (from Best Gaskets) has 3 notches on one side (see attached picture). Should those notches be on the side that rests against the holder, or on the side that seals against the timing cover? I didn't notice any notches on the original, but it was quite old.

Use something like Indian Head gasket shellac or a hardening gasket sealant to hold the cork in the holder. Do not soak it in oil first, that will prevent the shellac or hardening gasket sealant from doing its job. When ready to install, some oil or light grease on the face that goes against the metal cover is appropriate, with the motor running it will soon enough become thoroughly wetted with motor oil.

Sorry, no idea about the notches, they weren't on my original. Perhaps a later change intended to go against the metal cover to minimize chatter?

The notches face the timing cover. Be certain the cork ring will slide with slight pressure over the neck of the vibration damper. Many of them are too tight as supplied and the spring loaded holder will not be able to push them forward to contact the timing cover. A few minutes with a rolled up piece of sandpaper will cure that.
