Your existing air filter is just fine. Easy flow is not a problem. Only restricted flow is a problem.

My 1953 Clipper Deluxe had the smaller one at the top while my 1951 Henney-Packard has the lower one. For the one on the Clipper, the hand-knob made removal for servicing very easy and tool-free!

Thank you all for your help, you have reassured me. I will not modify the air cleaner. The type of air cleaner on my Clipper is also the one shown in the upper picture. It seems that the previous owner may have damaged the top bowl in order to screw it on, as seen in my picture.
