I believe it was standard practice to install accessory fuel filters in just that way. I have a '37 120 with a Carter ceramic filter right at the carburetor bowl. It's easy to access and it has given no problems. I don't think the steel fuel line was modified to install the filter.

Here is an illustration from the 48 accessory folder showing the typical method of installation if a customer bought the optional fuel filter.
The inverted flare tube fitting was removed from the carb and moved to the inlet port of the filter. A nipple adapter was screwed back into the carb inlet and outlet port of filter screwed to that.

Thanks, I shall proceed to purchase a new ceramic filter for the glass bowl and have the fuel line connector threads chased out before installing it. 👍🏻
