1956 Executive Generator

Is there a good source for a new Generator for my 5670 series Packard? I was not able to find one yet.

Generator is Auto-Lite GJC-7002F. Simuilar items were built into other 1956 junior models.

Does there a modern replace part exist?

At least here in the US generators are rebuilt as needed, and service parts and knowledgeable rebuilders quite common. A rebuilt generator should give +/- 50,000 to 70,000 miles of service.

Have you concluded that yours in not rebuildable, or have you not explored that option? Used generators from the V8 Packards are also readily available, though as with anything purchased "used" they may require some service before installing.

As I have few mechanical knowledge and as I am handicapped, I have to rely on a (although very good) workshop. Seems the anchor (correct expression in English?) is damaged beyond repair.

Packard parts are scarce in Europe. Meantime I got an offer for a repair kit. Did you refer to such an item?

Don't know what you mean by "anchor". Possibly an armature - the rotating core shaft? I'm not familiar with generator "kits" but the usual service parts are brushes, bearing and bushing, all readily available at NAPA and other auto parts stores.

You might consider buying a used generator from someone like Mike Dulinski, and have him ship it with an extra set of brushes and bearing/bushing; then having a local shop check it out.

By "anchor" I take it to mean that one of the ears that allow you to bolt it to the engine have broken off.

Maybe you could order a rebuilt generator from one of the Packard specialists in the US such as Max Merritt or Kanter.

michaelk, the anchor points on these generators which are really holes in the commutator end housing (back) or drive end housing (front) are common among the Delco Remy and Autolite manufactures. That is, these parts fit across many makes and models of vehicles. Delco and Autolite housings are not interchangeable. Finding a back or front housing for your generator should be relatively easy even in CH. Good luck.

And now for an update.

We got the needed item in Belgium. It is an internal part, not an engine mounting device. So, I think that Owen_Dyneto's definition "rotating core shaft" is the correct one. Sorry for that...

Next problem is that the wire is wound up in the wrong way. I know that Packard changed polarity (correct expression?) in 1956 so that electric items and accessories are not per se interchangeable. Is that the cause here? My mechanic is sure that the part has the correct part number...

BTW: Shortly after my initial posting I got my copy of Kanter's '55 / '56 listing. They have generators for my car.

A generator will work with either Negative earth or Positive earth, it all depends on how you handle the regulator. If the regulator has been energized for Negative earth, (which in '56 would be correct) then you should have no worries.
